Power Infrastructure as an Edge

A data centre is a thirty year commitment to a power system. Short-term prices move, water years come and go, and none of that decides where infrastructure of this kind belongs. The question that matters is what the region's power system will look likeover the life time of our planned projects.


For Central Norway, we see three durable answers.


A structural price advantage, not a cyclical one. Across the 2020 to 2024 period, wholesale power in Central Norway cleared several times below comparable European markets, including through the 2022 energy crisis. The reason is architectural. Continental prices are largely set by gas at the margin. Ours are set by hydropower. As long as that difference holds, and nothing in the European outlook suggests it disappears this decade, the region prices below European industrial levels. Statnett's own long-term market analysis, which runs to 2050, points the same way.


Renewable and dependable, which is a rarer combination than it sounds. Norwegian electricity is almost entirely renewable, and mostly hydropower with reservoir storage behind it. For facilities running around the clock, storage-backed clean power is worth considerably more than a cheap hour on a windy afternoon. It also means new industry here starts inside tightening European energy and climate requirements rather than working toward them over a decade.


A grid with depth, on a strengthening trajectory. Central Norway has genuine high voltage transmission capacity, with meshed 420 kV infrastructure and sites that can connect to more than one substation. That redundancy is what makes a facility dependable enough for hospitals, researchers and regulated industry, and it is scarcer across Europe than people assume.



It also improves from here. The recognised constraint is limited transfer capacity south of Klæbu, which restricts how much of the large surplus in Northern Norway and Northern Sweden reaches the region. Statnett is addressing it directly, with a planned new crossing of the Trondheimsfjord and a new Åfjord to Snildal connection toward 2030. Both strengthen the corridor over exactly the horizon that matters to us.

We intend to help pay for that strengthening rather than queue behind it, by investing in the hydro, wind, storage and grid work that makes new capacity possible. Load that arrives with capacity attached is welcome. Load that only consumes competes with the smelter, the shipyard and the household, and Norway is entitled to tell the two apart.


That is the long-term power case for Central Norway. Solid fundamentals, a strengthening grid, and a region building for decades rather than quarters.
